Strawberries Will Save The World
Director : Yoko Okumura
Like writing a journal, the commitment to beginning and then maintaining a collection is something that has always eluded me. I envy those who do. Those who are dedicated enough to withstand the flipancy of human nature, who resist apathy and embrace one, very specific thing or theme, long enough to establish a back catalogue. I find it comforting that there are people out there who care enough about the obscure to preserve, and I applaud their regimented approach to an ongoing quest. This is perhaps why I found the short, short, Strawberries Will Save the World so uplifting. Yuku Okumura, the mother of director , Yoko, is obsessed with strawberries. They infiltrate every part of her life, from her clothing choices to her social circle. In whatever form she finds them, strawberries simply make her happy. But hiding in this obsession is a greater wisdom, that keeping yourself happy is a revolutionary act and one that ripples. It is the small pleasures to be found in life that she believes make the biggest difference. You just have to know where to look.
